The Impact of Plastic Waste Mismanagement in Sri Lanka

The total amount of plastic solid waste in Sri Lanka is recorded at 938.42 MT/D. Out of this quantity, 300 MT/D is collected, while 600 MT/D is mismanaged. These plastic wastes originate from various sources such as households, hotels, restaurants, businesses, organizations, and schools. The collection process involves both formal and informal methods carried out by local authorities, private solid waste management companies, as well as registered primary and secondary level waste collectors under the purview of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) or Pradeshiya Sabha. The collected plastic solid wastes are subsequently purchased by recyclers who engage in the activities of bailing, transporting, crushing, and producing pellets. These recycled materials are then sold to manufacturers. The range of plastic items encompassed within this process includes basins, pots, toys, coin containers, hangers, garbage bags, agriculture hoses, planting bags, and more.
